I read, therefore I am.

I have been blogging at WordPress for well over fifteen years, originally under the header “Read ’em and Eat”. When I started I was trying to make a site that might be a useful resource for book club novices; a place to select a book, find some questions and even get a recipe or two.  Sadly, I didn’t have the time to do it properly and, truthfully, there are already sites that do it way better than I ever could.

In December 2009, I went to a panel discussion about reading and was introduced to the term ‘ludic reader’. Turns out, that’s just what I am: I read for pleasure. I decided then and there that I wanted to rethink/redesign my blog and really focus in on what I most enjoy: chatting about the books. That’s when I rebranded and I have been The Ludic Reader ever since.

My name is Christie. I live in Atlantic Canada.  I teach high school English, but have had (it seems) a hundred other jobs. I love to travel. I love to cook. And I love to read.

I’d love to get to know you.

Updated May 27, 2016 to add: My new header was handpainted by my talented friend (and member of my book club!), Marianne. She does sell her work. Shoot me a note if you’re interested.

Updated July 1, 2024: I finally changed my photo because it was way past time. This new photo was taken by my bff Michelle of Bite by Michelle.

      • I found your blog quite by accident, when I was searching for something else. But wanted to thank you for kind words for my books, and for bringing attention to so many worthy writers. I think you would be enjoy my latest, which are tiny true stories. It’s called Notes From the porch. Keep up all the good work!

  2. Hi Christie! I just discovered your blog through CBC Books Featured Reader. I love that you’re not afraid to say when and why a book doesn’t work for you. I’ve read too many book blogs that only review books they liked. Kudos on the fresh and honest approach!! I too will be bookmarking you.
    Cheers!

      • Well, if you travel here (and if I do not move to Canada!) don’t forget me. I live in the North East of Italy, about 50 minutes from Venice (by train):-)

      • Oh, here there is not plenty of book lover… Italy in my opinion is a book-lovers-poor country. This is why I am here in the web, to look for book lovers from all over the world!

      • I love the Internet for that very reason – so may opportunities to meet people from all over the world. We are way more alike than we are different, really. 🙂

  3. Hi Christie,
I like your site, and would be so happy should you care to consider my new novel This Is All He Asks Of You to review, and as a possibility for your book club!
